The Erie St. Clair LHIN is creating sub-regions, or local planning areas, as a means to improve health care planning and better coordinate health care services in each local community.

While ESC residents can continue to receive health care wherever they need it, focusing on smaller areas to plan health service delivery makes sense: our region is large, diverse, and is a unique mix of urban and rural areas. We know that health care needs and the way we access health care services vary among people living in different parts of our region.

Jun 30, 2016 Ontario Strengthening Access to End-of-Life Care in Erie St. Clair

As part of its commitment to strengthening access to palliative and end-of-life care, the $13.9 million additional investment across the province will increase funding for existing hospice beds by $15,000 per adult bed and $22,400 per pediatric bed. The four hospices across Chatham-Kent, Sarnia/Lambton, and Windsor/Essex will be receiving a total funding increase of $570,000.

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, has appointed Bonnie Adamson as an Investigator to work with the Chatham Kent Health Alliance (CKHA). Bonnie Adamson, former President and CEO for London Health Sciences Centre, North York General, the Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership, has accepted the appointment and will be working with the three CKHA hospital boards.

Residents of Sarnia/Lambton now have access to new cardiac care services through the creation of the Heart Failure Clinic at the North Lambton Community Health Centre. On December 17, 2015, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) released Patients First: A Proposal to Strengthen Patient-Centred Health Care in Ontario, a discussion paper that outlines proposed changes for the health care system. The proposed structural changes would see Local Health Integration Networks assume responsibility for home and community care, system integration, and have greater involvement with primary care, and improved linkages with population health planning.

In 2008/09 fiscal year, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital’s ED received a total of 4,150 visits by patients with a mental health diagnosis. Approximately half of these visits (or 3,597) were for non-urgent/less urgent issues. Additionally, 1,092 or 27% of these visits were made by mental health patients classified as “unattached” or without a family doctor.

After a positive meeting last week, the Erie St. Clair LHIN (ESC LHIN) and Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) today announced the immediate designation of Observation beds for the Sydenham Campus Emergency Department (ED) and that they would not form part of CKHA’s fiscal recovery strategy. These monitored beds (previously stretchers) ensure that patients presenting with acute conditions, but who do not require immediate transfer, may remain in Wallaceburg while their condition is further assessed or stabilized. Observation beds are provided for patients who require further clinical evaluation and/or short term therapeutic interventions to determine the need for admissions.
